Can we talk? I mean, really? It’s early evening in November, 2019-there’s a chill in the air. I’m sitting in my office upstairs in my 5,000sf showroom and warehouse. I’m realizing that at the end of this day, after 34 years, I’m ready to give up my floral business. Yes, I reached my 1m+ milestone but really I was living that stressed success life and I hated it.
You see, two weeks before, I fired my head designer. I had it. I was letting my employees run my life and business. And the realization had hit that I LET IT HAPPEN. I had been through a series of decisions, over the past 6 six years especially, that had gotten me to this place.
I had given up so much in my family life just to run “my baby” only to be the “babysitter” for 15+ employees. I felt like I was drowning.
So that afternoon, two weeks later. I made the decision to sell the business. My lease would be up by June 2020 and I had time to sell it. I could do it. I had the means to get it done. Sell off inventory, sell off the client list/phone number/website, and then no ties to a location. I’d be done! As I sat there, I was dreaming and it felt freeing. What a release came to my body.
The thought came to me, you know, you’ve been wanting to do more consulting for others in this business…fix your life and help them. Yes, I’m gonna do it! I twirled around in my chair and it stopped where I would be looking straight at the certifications on my wall. It gave me pause to be grateful. These things…these tiny daily little things that had all accumulated to what I had now, the ups and downs, are just part of life. And those experiences gave me so many lessons to share, memories to enjoy (even some that weren’t so joyful), and hope for the future.
Now, as I embark on coaching and consulting other creative entrepreneurs, I know that I’m not a rookie and am able to help them along those hills and valleys, sometimes strenuous but always worth it as it leads to success.
